My Life

Wish I lived by the ocean

January 18, 2010

Dameian and I were lucky enough to travel down to Florida for the holidays.  After months of boots and coats, the sunshine felt really nice.  Here we are on Miami Beach.

D has a hard time staying serious for pictures.

Here’s my mom with her husband.  Yes, I realize that I am a serious whitey compared to my mother.  (She’s wearing the necklace that I made her for Christmas!)

Wish this was my every day view.

A new year, a new endeavor

January 4, 2010

Dameian and I have deemed 2010 “The Year of Kicking Ass.”  This means really working out (like running, ok, more like jogging and speed walking), eating at home the majority of the time, flossing every day, celebrating each day, and making a buck.  Hey, I’ve got bills to pay.  Ya’ll know about my Etsy shop already.  I plan to keep adding little tidbits to it here and there.  BTW: If you have an idea for a project, don’t hesitate to contact me.

My newest plan, edeavor, wish, and dream is to start a photography business.  2009 was the year of the Nikon (on the Ashley Calendar it was).  I rocked that baby out.  I even read the entire manual!  I’d rather read the back of a lotion bottle, but I did it anyway.  Why?  I needed to know.  I needed to know everything about my sweet Nikon.  What tricks did she have up her sleeve?  What in the world did all those settings do?  What is her favorite food?  It’s macaroni and cheese, see, we’re like twins.  Did she love Dirty Dancing?

If you were wondering, her name is Julie.  Maybe I’ll start calling her Jules for short.

Little by little, hour by countless hour, I started to figure things out.  OMG I finally get aperture.  Like, I really get it!

Which brings me to these photos that I am itching to show you.  I’m really itching, winter eczema on my hands sucks.  Over the next few months, I’ll be taking photos of family and friends who don’t mind me telling them what to do for a few hours.  It’s called “portfolio building,” ya’ll.  Lucky for me, a wonderful friend of mine birthed recently a terribly handsome little man named Jaxson James.

Halloween 2009 Costumes

November 3, 2009

I had no clue what I wanted to be this Halloween.  However, after finding a cute little dress from Target with tons of black tulle, I knew it would be perfect.  Paired with a red corset, fishnet stockings, shoebooties (that’s what I call ankle boots), and doll makeup, what was I?  I don’t know.  Just a general vampy character.

Here’s my makeup.

Whoa, look at my lashes (three coats of mascara)!

That photo kinda reminds me of Blair Witch Project.

And now for Dameian’s costume.  He decided on Halloween day that he wanted to be a deranged farmer serial killer.  We set off to three different thrift stores looking for overalls.   None were to be found.  So he wore a pair of old jeans and a plaid shirt.  Then he fashioned a mask out of a burlap-look fabric (from a ladies shirt found at The Goodwill), cut eyeholes, and sewed up the back.  Well, I did the sewing part.

The fun part was laying the costume out on the garage floor and dripping blood, more like acrylic paint, all over it.  Really, it was fun splattering it all around.

Here he is with a Captain Morgan and Diet Coke, sipping through his mouth hole.

Dearest Halloween,

I love you.  There, I said said.  I look forward to you every single year, usually planning my costume months in advance.  Candy.  One of my favorite parts.  Especially those mini Twix and Snickers.  Oh, and I can’t forget the jar of candy corn that has been sitting in a nice little basket on my end table since last year.  Remember last year?  I know, it was so sad.  I was too sick to dress up and go out.  The horror.  The tragedy.  This year, I have the cutest little frilly black dress.  I can be a vampire, a witch, a dark fairy, a goth girl, or some other frilly black dress thingy.  I can’t wait.

Yours truly,

Ashley

Now, for all of you that came here for costume ideas, I thought I’d raid the vault for some of my favorite costumes throughout the years.

Elementary

Simple and Easy:
Animal (In my case, a bunny.)
circa 1988

Re-purpose:
Zombie Princess and 50s girl (My sister’s princess costume was actually her flower girl dress that she wore to my aunt’s wedding.  The great poodle skirt was made by my seamstress extraordinaire grandmother and was for a school program.)
circa 1989

Now fast forward many years in which I dressed as a hobo, Kermit the Frog, Country Girl (plaid shirt, overalls, braids, hat), genie, hula dancer, witch, Gypsie, among other costumes.

The College Years

(I went a little crazy…)

Crazy All-Out:
Space Cadet
circa 2001

Now all the world can see me in hot pink fishnets.  I think I totally rocked that pink wig.

Next is one of my all time faves.

Two friends and I decided we’d all dress up as different Madonnas.  I bought the fabric and then waited until Halloween day to sew myself a dress.  BY HAND.  I did not have a sewing machine at the time.  I sewed a freakin’ dress.  BY HAND.

Sew Yourself Something:
Material Girl Madonna
circa 2003

Post Grad

Things calmed down a bit by this time.  Let’s be something sweet…aw.

Find a cute dress at Ross that looks like it could be a costume:
Ladybug
circa 2006

Halloween

Rock & Roll Superstar:
Slash and Axl Rose
circa 2007

That’s my guy and me.  Dameian totally looks like Slash.   Really, he always looks that.

Alright…that’s a wig…and a fake nose ring.

Summertime Tradition

August 13, 2009

Just about every summer of my childhood, my sister and I would travel up to my Mamaw and Papaw’s in North Carolina.  We lived in Miami, so our trips to NC were like going to ta different world.  We’d spend most of the day running around outside, playing on the swing set, eating Spaghettios for lunch, and awesome Southern fried dinners.   My favorite time was at dusk when we went outside to catch lighting bugs.

Now I live just under two hours away.

Here’s a photo of the well behind my Mamaw’s.  I’ve posted it before, but with different editing.

And here I am with my little sister, over 20 years ago.
