My Very Own Chalkboard

June 21, 2009

I can’t remember the last time I wrote on a chalkboard.  OK, it was just this morning, since I’m now the new proud owner of a cute little chalkboard.  And I made it myself.

All I did was buy a frame at The Goodwill and buy a can of Rustoleum chalkboard spray paint.  I  spray painted the frame white and then sanded the edges for that nice worn look.  Then, I sprayed the glass insert with two coats of chalkboard spray paint, letting the first coat dry completely before doing the second coat.  Insert said insert into frame.  Drive all over town looking for chalk because, apparently, this is one difficult item to find.

Seriously, Hobby Lobby had a pack of 10 boxes of chalk (way too much for my purposes, unless I start teaching my dog Fritz some Algebra), two Dollar Stores didn’t carry it, and neither did Target.  I finally found a box of good ol’ Crayola white chalk at Wally World.

Here is the “Before” shot of my 99 cent Goodwill frame.  It really helps to look for frames with ornate decoration/molding as this makes for a more interesting look once you paint it.

I Made Marble Magnets

June 18, 2009

I saw some cute marble magnets on another blog and I thought I’d try my hand at them.  It was so easy!

Supplies

  • Flat Marbles (the kind found in the flower decorating section of the craft store, sold in mesh bags),
  • Hole punch slightly smaller in diameter of your marbles,
  • Pretty paper with a small pattern,
  • Craft Glue (Tacky Glue)
  • Heavy Duty Glue (I used Beacon 527)
  • Round Magnets

Step 1: Punch paper into small circles

Step2: Lay circle of paper, pattern side facing up, on your craft surface (I use paper plates) and put a dab of craft glue on it.

Step 3: Place flat side of marble on top of the glue.  Let dry.

Step 4: Lay magnet on craft surface and place a dab of heavy duty glue on it.

Step 5: Place flat paper side of marble on the magnet and push down.  Allow to dry the recommended time on the glue container.  If you want to protect the paper circle, you can cover it with Mod Podge before you attach to the magnet.

That’s it.  I knocked one of the fridge the other day and it stayed together, so these are pretty and durable :)

I’m a Winner!

June 16, 2009

I just received a Blog Award from the love lady at Whisper Wood Cottage.  She thinks my blog is fabulous.  I think her blog is fabulous too!

Wow!  I’d like to thank the Academy, my mom, my boyfriend who designed my blog, my cup of coffee, my white desk and white mac book, bread and butter, my sewing machine, ribbon, Lowes, yes, definitely Lowes, spray paint, HGTV, The Goodwill, Whisper Wood Cottage, my dog Fritzer for putting up with me through thick and thin, and mosquito repellent.  I couldn’t have done it without you.  What?  They’re starting the music.  OK, I’m done.

A Blue Garden Bench

June 15, 2009

I love free stuff.  Even if I don’t want it of need it, if it’s free, it delights me.  So imagine my glee when I saw a really nice garden bench just hanging out beside the dumpster at my neighborhood pool house.  And right beside the nice garden bench was another bench!  I told Dameian to pull over, stat, I needed those benches.

Is it dumpster diving if you don’t actually dive into the dumpster?

Sure, the paint was peeling off the garden bench.  Yep, the wooden bench had a broken leg.  But I could already see them all fixed up and shining in my house.  After three cans of Krylon spray paint in Bahama Sea (Doesn’t that name make you sigh?), here is my new garden bench:

Check out those spider mums, over two weeks old!  Those flowers last forever.

And here is my garden bench before the makeover:

I spent three hours scraping paint…

Dameian says my makeover projects are like a play.

Act One: Wow, look at that!  That would look perfect in the house!  I’ll just clean it, paint it, refinish it, fix it, rebuild it, love it, and cherish it forever.

Act Two: Oh my God.  This project is never ending.  My back hurts.  My head hurts. My hands hurt.  I hate fixing things up.

Act Three: Wow, look at that!  I LOVE it!  I’m so proud of myself.  Lets go look at it again.  Lets take pictures of it.  Don’t you love it?  I love it!

I had high hopes for my trip to the Metrolina Antiques & Collectibles Show last weekend.  Dameian and I even got there early, so we just had to leave, stop at McDonalds for a coffee and a hasbrown, and then go back for the opening.

We walk around the whole show, I have a popcorn before realizing that just outside the building is a guy making kettle corn!  I’m dissapointed.  We walk around some more.  We leave.

All we bought was popcorn and a little wheel to replace the mising one off my $45 CraigsList table.  For some reason D called the whole trip a fiasco.  I’m not sure why because overall it was pretty boring.  But atleast we got to stop for lunch at Cook-out and we had the yummiest Banana Pudding Milk Shake.  Oh my, that thing was good.

Does anybody else feel so silly when being photographed.  I always feel like an idiot.  I didn’t want to be too posey, so I told D to surprise me with the shots.  Hmm.

This is me trying to take nap after the market.  See, Belle’s hugging me, isn’t she sweet?

So this morning, after I drink my coffee, I’m off to visit some yard sales in my hood.  Wish me luck :)
