blueberries

Don’t these bluberries look just gorgeous?!

I visited the Charlotte Farmers Market earlier today and came home with a pint of the blueberries.  Normally, I’m not much of a blueberry person (they are usually pretty plain to me), but these are so sweet and delicious.

It’s decided; blueberry pancakes for breakfast tomorr0w!

I am in the process of redecorating my office / craft room / small guest room.  One of the first things I knew I had to do was replace the light fixture.  It was a weird mini ceiling fan/light combo…and it was pretty ugly.  Dameian said I would regret changing it out because it gets hot upstairs, I said, well, I’ll just get a cool antique fan for my desk ;)

I found this light fixture at the Habitat ReStore for $20.  It was cheap, especially considering that the ReStore prices are high.  I know it’s for a good cause, but a lot of the furniture is really old, not in the best of shape, and just crazy priced.  Is it like that at all the ReStores?

I know she’s kind of homely, all right, maybe she’s ugly.  But with a little TLC, she really has come out of her shell.  All I did was take her outside, rig her up to my ladder so that she would hang while I painted, and spray painted away.  Then, I, (ok, I have no clue how electricity works) Dameain in all his DIY mastery, removed the ugly fan and installed this lovely lady:

I love how white and sparkly the milk glass globes look against the cream fixture.  Next on my list is a sleeve for the chain which I’ll make out of leftover fabric from my latest pillow project.  You can see my handiwork in the next photo.  Yes, I realize that the futon cushion is not on the frame.  It’s in the other guest bedroom, patiently waiting for me to finish painting the office furniture.  What a fiasco that has been!  More office photos to come as soon as it’s finished  :)

Planting Calla Lillies

May 20, 2009

Sometime in early March, I planted some Calla Lily bulbs.  I’ve had luck with bulbs around my yard so I thought I’d give them a chance in a nice white container.  Here’s the low down:

Grab some container soil, a coffee filter, a container, and some bulbs.  Yes, this is an easy project.

Fill the container to the depth that the bulbs need to be planted.  The bulb package will have this info.

Place your bulbs on the soil with the pointy side facing up.  My bulbs were already starting to grow, so this made it even easier to see the top side.

Now cover with soil, place in a sunny spot, water, and wait for the pretty lilies to grow nice and tall.

Just like this:

I love this pretty in pink addition to my back porch!

If you have ever installed flooring yourself, well, you soooo know that it is not fun.  Sure, it’s technically easy.  You bring two pieces together, snap, and lay them down.  Simple, right? You already installed floors in another house, so doing it again will be a…snap.  The truth is, no, it won’t be a snap.  It will probably take a zillion years longer than you thought it would take, cost more than you budgeted, and basically drive you to the brink of insanity.

If we had tons of money to blow, we would’ve had the nice Lowes guys come out and do it for us.  But we don’t, and we’re the DIY kinda household anyway…even if we know ahead of time that it really will be much harder than we anticipate.

In the beginning: We pull up carpet.  We roll carpet.  We sneeze.  A lot.

A little ways through:  The laminate floor looks good.  We like it.  We’re glad we picked this color.  It was worth going to Lowes, Home Depot, Lumber Liquidators a thousand times just to look and pine over fake wood.

Wow, one room down…a week later.  I think Roscoe likes it:

1,200 square feet and a few months later, the floors are finally finished.  Except for the quarter round in the kitchen.  We ran out, geez.  This truly is the forever project.

Lucy is sad that she can’t run as fast on the new floor.  At least she can’t scratch it like she would hardwood.

Fritz is pleased.

Roses in bloom

May 12, 2009

This is why I love roses:

This is why I hate roses:

Roses are lovely.  They smell crazy good.  They make me smile.  However, no matter what I do, I cannot get rid of the black spot, the white bugs that eat the buds, and the other critters that eat the leaves.  So I end up with beautiful flowers and ugly plants.  Really ugly and beat up plants.  Lucky for those ugly legs on my roses, I plan on planting some Shasta Daisies under them.  Hopefully they’ll grow big enoung to cover up the yuckiness.

I apologize if I’ve offended you, your roses, or any of your gardener friends.  I maintain that I only pretend to know my way around a garden.  ;)
